Leaving money to a charity in your will is one way of doing so. At the Society for the Assistance of Ladies in Reduced Circumstances most of the income that we need for our work comes from our investments. By remembering us in your will you can make a real difference to the lives of even more women in the future. Q. What are the tax advantages of leaving money to charity? A. If you leave money and possessions worth more than a set value, currently £312,000, your beneficiaries (the people you’re leaving it to) may have to pay 40% Inheritance Tax on the amount over that threshold. £312,000 may seem a great deal of money but, if you include your home, you could find your savings and possessions add up to more than that. However, donations to charity are exempt from tax, so anything you leave to the Society for the Assistance of Ladies in Reduced Circumstances is free of Inheritance Tax and we will receive the full amount. Ask your solicitor about the best ways to use your will to reduce tax. Q. What will it cost me? A.. When your solicitor is next updating your will simply ask them to include a donation to your favourite cause. It doesn’t need to cost anything extra if you are already revising your will. Apart from that there’s only the price of the phone call to tell us – that’s all it will cost in your lifetime. Q. Do I need to tell you that I’ve included you in my will? A. It’s not essential, but we would be delighted if you chose to. Simply phone or write to us. Any information that you give to us will be treated in strictest confidence. We will then make sure that we send you regular information about our work. Q. Do I have to leave a lot? A. It’s up to you. We would be very grateful for any amount you are able to afford and your donation will make a real difference to the work of the Society for the Assistance of Ladies in Reduced Circumstances. Q. I want to include the Society for the Assistance of Ladies in Reduced Circumstances – what should I do next? A. Simply tell your solicitor you want to include the Society for the Assistance of Ladies in Reduced Circumstances in your will and what you want to leave, and they’ll make the necessary changes. In order that we may continue to use your gift for our work in the long term, please ask them to include the words “to be added to the permanent endowment of the Society’s funds”.
